What is Counselling?

People seek counselling support for many different reasons. We all experience times in our lives when we feel stuck and unable to live in a way we would like. My role as counsellor is to support you to explore your situation in a safe and non judgmental way and to help you to make greater sense of your experience. We will explore the ways in which you might be holding yourself back from a fuller way of living and consider alternative ways of managing and responding to the challenges you experience.

Whether you need to offload, understand or reach a place of inner acceptance and change, counselling offers you an opportunity to be with what is and to find healthier options of relating to your difficulties.

The awareness and understanding gained through counselling often helps us to gain an increased sense of choice and control in our lives. By developing the skill to become more aware and present in our lives, we are better able to choose our responses to challenges instead of being hijacked by our automatic reactions.

Paradoxically, when we learn to let go and accept what we cannot change, with compassion and gentleness, we can experience relief, clarity and well-being. Each of us has our own unique set of challenges and goals for counselling. In addition to general counselling, I work with the issues listed in the introduction.

How will you know if counselling is right for you?

Many people are uncertain as to whether counselling is right for them. Our first session together serves as a mutual evaluation session. This session will enable you to ask the questions you need to know and to assess whether you feel you could work with me.

I, in turn, will endeavour to gain an understanding of your issues and expectations of counselling to enable me to assess whether I am the best person for you.

If, by the end of your first session, we feel it is appropriate to continue with the counselling, we can arrange future appointments.

I trust that each and every one of us has the means and ability to tap into our inner wisdom and awareness to overcome the challenges and obstacles to health and potential. Every struggle offers an opportunity for insight and growth, and my role is to help you to make greater sense of your situation and to find your own answers.

Working with Creativity and Flexibility.

We all have different styles of understanding and relating to experience.

My way of working integrates Mindfulness based approaches (MBCT and MBSR) and the Humanistic models of Gestalt, Psychosynthesis, FIRO and body orientated methods - all with the intention of offering you a flexible and creative means of developing your own inner resources and resilience to maintain a sense of equilibrium and flexibility in integrating the therapeutic work.
