About Us

Deborah Mitchell MBACP (Accred), BACP Registered

I have had the privilege of working in the field of personal development since 2000 and currently offer Mindfulness courses, mindfulness based counselling and coaching for individuals, couples and groups from my private practice in Lewes, Sussex.

I have been facilitating mindfulness training since 2009 in settings that have included a private mental health hospital in Central London, a local GP surgery, organisations and many courses for the general public.

I follow an on-going supervised teacher-training pathway with The Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at The University of Bangor and have specialist teacher training in the following areas:

  • Mindfulness for Stress and Well-Being, MBSR/MBCT (training with CMRP, Bangor University)
  • Mindfulness for Interpersonal Relationships (Training with Metta and Oasis Institute, USA)
  • Mindfulness for Pain and Illness (Training with Breathworks, Manchester)

My personal interest in Mindfulness began in 2007 in response to a need to find a way of supporting myself through an extremely challenging period in my life. My mindfulness journey has been a powerful one and I am passionate at the way in which mindfulness supports us to be more present, sensitive and compassionate in our relationships with others and with ourselves.

As a mindfulness facilitator, I adhere to the Good Practice Guidelines of the UK Network of Mindfulness-based Teachers. Teacher Guidelines.

I am a registered Mindfulness trainer with The UK Network for Teacher Training Organisations - www.mindfulness-network.org.

I am also a registered Mindfulness trainer with The Mental Health Foundation - www.bemindful.co.uk.

My way of working as a counsellor and therapist integrates Mindfulness based approaches (MBCT and MBSR) and the humanistic approaches of Gestalt and Psychosynthesis. My work is becoming increasingly informed by neuro-science and mind body medicine. As a BACP Accreditated Counsellor, I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework: Ethical Framework

My understanding of the psychology of relationships and group dynamics has been greatly influenced by the interpersonal model of FIRO Theory, together with my training in Contextual Couple’s Counselling.

I worked for 7 years within the field of organizational development consultancy, specializing in the psychology of relationships and emotional intelligence. During this time I trained and qualified as a group process facilitator and was awarded a 2-Year Master Practitioner Diploma in FIRO Theory.

I have many years’ experience of working in business in a variety of roles and understand the challenges of managing business processes, group dynamics and interpersonal relationships.

Adam Levene MA Art Therapist, HCPC Registered, Member of BAAT

In my professional practice as art psychotherapist, I support individuals with a wide range of issues including life threatening illness, dementia, depression, anxiety, bereavement/loss, low self esteem and loss of meaning or direction in life. I currently work with cancer patients at Barts Hospital in London, run a weekly art therapy group with patient’s at St. Peter & St. James Hospice in East Sussex and have a private practice in Lewes.

In preparation for my Masters training, my art therapy experience began in 2006 as a volunteer supporting a senior art therapist at a Marie Curie Hospice in North London. In addition to this, I introduced one to one art sessions to autistic children at The TreeHouse School in London. Teachers and parents alike were surprised and delighted at the way in which the children engaged with the art making process.

As part of my art therapy training I secured a clinical placement with Cancer Psychological Services at Barts Hospital in London and was responsible for starting up and running an open studio art therapy group. The group offered patients a safe and supportive space away from the hospital’s clinical environment to do something creative and to share and explore thoughts and feelings with others who may have been going through similar experiences. I also ran individual sessions in a designated art therapy room and at patients’ bedsides. After graduating, I was offered an honorary art therapy post at Barts which led onto a paid position.

On completing my training in 2010 I was offered a post as a sessional art therapist with Claremont Project. Claremont is a registered charity based in London for older people living in the community. I worked in the post for over five years seeing clients with mental health issues for long-term individual therapy as well as running a weekly art therapy group. The group participants met together on a regular basis with a view to helping develop their capacity to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives, engage in social relationships, whilst also developing greater self awareness and insight through art making and discussion.

I joined Sunrise Senior Living in 2010 and ran art therapy groups for both their residents and residents with dementia. Sunrise were originally very sceptical as to whether any of their residents would have the capacity to engage in art making and the therapeutic process. I therefore suggested running a few sessions to see how art therapy would be received. It proved to be very effective with residents loyally and enthusiastically attending every week. I recommended another art therapist when I moved to Sussex and Sunrise continue to offer art therapy to their residents three years on.

Mindfulness meditation has been an integral part of my life for many years and informs the way I work with my clients. Deborah and I have been co-facilitating Mindfulness based Art Therapy courses for the past 4 years and currently offer an 8-week course for the general public as well as shorter introductory events.

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I completed my Masters training at Hertfordshire University (with distinction) in May 2010. I am a member of The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) and as such abide by the strict ethical codes of conduct in line with both these professional bodies.
